When it comes to home decorating, nothing is more challenging and frustrating as replacing old, worn-out floors. Unlike other aspects such as painting and replacing furniture, replacing the entire floor is a much more complicated and expensive endeavor.
However, this doesn’t mean that you have to live with your rickety old floors. Nowadays, there are numerous flooring options for one to consider, which are not only affordable but also easy to install. At the same time, you cannot simply pick any of the choices offered at random and it is wise to do a bit of research.

Here’s a brief overview of the different flooring types and where they can be installed. In addition, we also highlight what one can expect from them in terms of durability and style and how one can go about installing them.

Flooring types we Install

Not all flooring types are made equal. Some are ideal for a more stylized room while others are much more durable and resistant to water and rough treatment. Here we take a look at the pros and cons of some of the popular flooring types to give you some idea as to where they can work best.
  • Hardwood
  • Engineered Wood
  • Bamboo Flooring
  • Porcelain Tile
  • Ceramic Tile
  • Natural Stone Tile

Hardwood Floors

Picture
Hardwood flooring is ideal for spaces that don’t get much traffic such as living rooms and bedrooms. It is made from different kinds of domestic woods such as oak and maple, or even exotic woods such as purple heart or Brazilian cherry.
They come finished in a couple of ways – pre-finished and unfinished. The former already has the finish applied, while the latter will require sanding and finishing to make it shiny and water-resistant before installation.
The advantage of hardwood is that it looks great with any kind of décor. It also lasts longer and can be refinished multiple times. Hardwood floors are also easier to clean and install. The disadvantage is that they don’t hold up well to rough handling. If exposed to moisture, they can warp easily which makes them unsuitable for the bathroom.

Engineered wood flooring

Engineered hardwood is a cheaper alternative to hardwood. They’re made by combining hardwood and layers of ply which gives them a similar look to hardwood but are better at moisture resistance. This is a good choice for areas where hardwood warping is a concern and since their make-up doesn’t utilize expensive woods, they’re a cost-effective solution.
These are quite stable and not prone to temperature changes and humidity. Many of them can also be directly installed over concrete subfloors. The disadvantage is that they’re just as susceptible to scratches as hardwood and are less durable than it. To learn more about Engineered wood floors, click here.

Bamboo flooring

Bamboo is an eco-friendly flooring option that is hard as compared to oak. Similar to hardwood, it also is available in strips and engineered planks. It comes in various grain patterns and can be processed to give it a darker finish.
One of its advantages is its toughness and durability. It is also available in easy-to-install forms and is an eco-friendly alternative to other flooring types. The disadvantage lies in the fact that the cheaper bamboo variants are susceptible to scratching and dents.

Porcelain or Ceramic
Tile flooring

Ceramic tiles are made by mixing clay and shale that are fired at high temperatures. This makes them hard and durable and also allows them to assume various shapes, colors, and patterns. Porcelain is a sub-type of ceramic flooring and is available either glazed or unglazed. Both can withstand the strain and heavy traffic and work well in outdoor rooms.
The advantage of ceramic flooring is that they can fit any style of home thanks to modern printing technology. It is also resistant to scratches, dents, and moisture and is easy to clean and maintain. The disadvantage is that tiles feel hard and cold underfoot and can be slippery unless they’re coating with an anti-slip finish.

Natural Stone Tile flooring

Stone is perhaps the most expensive type of flooring, though its high-quality adds to its luxurious feel. These are made from different stone types including granite, slate, marble, and limestone. Stones like sandstone are not as resistant to moisture as harder stones like marble. To maintain their appearance, stone tiles require finishing every few years. The chief advantage associated with stone tile flooring is its durability and luxurious quality. The disadvantage lies primarily in its cost.

Laminate flooring

Laminate flooring is similar in design to engineered flooring. The top layer is finished and sealed mounted over plywood for stability and durability. The chief difference between them is that laminate doesn’t have a real wood top layer. However, the technology of image capturing technology of photo-realism is so incredible that it looks identical to the actual thing.
The major advantages include easy maintenance and inexpensiveness. It is also fairly easy to install thereby saving you additional costs. The disadvantage is that it can be quite slippery and if the water is allowed to stand on it, it can get within the layers and warp the planks. It also cannot be refinished, only replaced.

Vinyl or Linoleum flooring

Vinyl feels softer underfoot compared to hardwood or tile but is nevertheless quite resilient. It is constructed by attaching the top PVC plastic layer over a layer of felt and foam. Vinyl flooring can have various textured surfaces to make it seem like stone or wood.
Its major advantage is that it is a tough material that can withstand moisture and heavy traffic. It is also quite inexpensive, easy to repair, and quite durable. The disadvantage is that it can vary in quality. Furthermore, if installed over a subfloor with no under-layer, it produces a hollow sound when walked upon.
